Professor John Pimanda
Professor John Pimanda, MBBS(Hons), PhD, FRACP, FRCPA is a clinician-scientist and Professor of Medicine at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre, UNSW Sydney, and a consultant haematologist at the Prince of Wales Hospital.
He completed his medical degree at UNSW Sydney, followed by specialist training in haematology and postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge. He leads a translational research program that integrates clinical trials with mechanistic studies of gene regulation in normal and malignant haematopoiesis, particularly in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
His laboratory has pioneered approaches to map gene regulatory networks, reprogram somatic cells, and dissect the tumour-stromal-immune interface in the bone marrow microenvironment. Professor Pimanda has led numerous investigator-initiated clinical trials and holds several patents, including for diagnostic assays and regenerative cell technologies. He is internationally recognised for his contributions to the biology of MDS/AML and therapeutic responses to hypomethylating agents.
